Dr. Sambamurti “Dr. Sam” Srinivasan
Formerly of Gladwin, Dr. Sambamurti “Dr. Sam” Srinivasan, age 93, passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2025.
Born in Pune, India, on May 8, 1931, Dr. Sam was the eldest of two children. He grew up in Southern India, where he excelled both in his studies and on the soccer field. He dabbled in playing the mridangam (Indian two-handed drum) and fostered a passion for music from a young age. These diverse early experiences paved the way for his future as a doctor, surgeon, and family man.
In 1957, Dr. Sam began his medical training at Madras Medical College in Chennai, India before relocating to the United States to continue his surgical education at Cornell Medical Center in New York City. From there, he trained at Binghamton University and the University of Pittsburgh, where he not only became Chief Resident but also met the love of his life, Aileen Ginevan. The couple married on June 17, 1960, embarking on nearly 65 years of adventures together, including the raising of two wonderful sons.
In 1963, Dr. Sam, Aileen, and their firstborn son, Jeff, set off on an international adventure with CARE Medico, providing medical services in Kabul, Afghanistan, and later in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. In March 1965, after the birth of their second son, Gregg, the family moved to the Detroit area, where Dr. Sam worked as a surgeon at Detroit Metropolitan Hospital. A few years later, in December 1969, the family of four relocated to Gladwin, Michigan, where Dr. Sam and Aileen would spend the next 42 years.
The lovebirds built a life in Gladwin, where he opened a family medical practice while continuing his work as a surgeon. Through his practice and the raising of their two sons, the pair formed a close and meaningful relationship with the community. After 32 years of practicing medicine in the community he loved, Dr. Sam closed his family medicine practice in 2001 but remained active in emergency medicine for several more years.
In 2011, after seeing both of his sons married and welcoming five grandchildren, Dr. Sam and Aileen moved to Sun City Center, Florida, where they enjoyed their retirement and time with family, friends, and the local community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, they relocated to Red Bank, New Jersey, to be closer to their family, where Dr. Sam would spend the remainder of his days.
Dr. Sam will be remembered not only as a beloved husband, father, and grandfather but also as a medical professional who touched the lives of countless individuals. Beyond his work as a surgeon, he quietly mentored many and anonymously funded scholarships for various educational and recreational experiences, enriching the lives of others.
Dr. Sam is survived by his darling wife, Aileen Srinivasan; their loving sons and daughters-in-law: Jeff and Margaret Srinivasan of Moorpark, California; and Gregg and LaVerne Srinivasan of Red Bank, New Jersey; as well as their five grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his legacy will live on for generations to come.
Om Shanti, may he rest in peace.
