Michael “Mike” Bernard Mewhiney
Michael “Mike” Bernard Mewhiney, age 75 of Gladwin, passed away on November 5, 2023, in the comfort of his own home. He was born on October 1, 1948, in Bay City, Michigan to Jerome and Shirley (Rayl) Mewhiney. He grew up and graduated from Fairgrove, Michigan in 1967. Shortly after graduation, he met the love of his life Kathryn Aylsworth in Bay City, Michigan at the Dew Drop Inn. After meeting, Michael was drafted into the Army and stationed in Fort Knox, Kentucky where he served two years with honorable discharge. On December 12, 1970, Michael and Kathryn got married in Fairgrove, Michigan. The couple resided there until August of 1973 when Michael accepted a position at the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Department and Courthouse. Michael was a UAW Local 1974 Member until he fully retired in October of 2012, after 33 and a half years of service.
Kathryn and Micheal were married for 19 years, in which they had two daughters, survived by Michael, Amy (Rob) Young and Holly (Jerry) Supinger, who are both residing in Gladwin, Michigan. Also survived by Michael is brother, Jim (Joyce) Mewhiney from Caro, Michigan. Sister, Paula (David) Ramsey from Bealton, Virginia. Sister-inlaw ,Bonnie Aylsworth from Illinois, and brother-in-law, Clark Bradley from Gladwin, Michigan. As well as nine grandchildren, John Michael, Dakota (Amber), Lilly-Rose, Dariyan, Olivia, Jaxson, Violet, Blaine, and Sawyer.
Michael was an outdoorsy man who tended to his lawn, frequently being told he had “the best lawn in the neighborhood.” He enjoyed fishing which included many family trips to the Rifle River for sucker fishing. Along with campfires and going on rides to and from town on his Can-Am Bike and his Polaris Razor. As much as he enjoyed being outside, his true form of happiness came from being with his grandchildren. Whether it was watching them play sports, buying them candy, or teasing them to have a good laugh.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn; both parents, Jerry and Shirley; father and mother-in-law, Merle and Elsie Aylsworth; brother-in-law, Jeffery Aylsworth; and sister-inlaw, Elizabeth (Aylsworth) Bradley.
Honoring his wishes, a cremation has taken place. In celebration of Michael, memorial services will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home in Gladwin, Michigan. The memorial service will be held directly after visitation at 1 p.m.
