Phillip J. Mercer

Phillip J. Mercer

Phillip J. Mercer, age 33, passed away on April 5, 2023 in Beaverton, Michigan to an illness and addiction that stole him from us. Phillip was born on November 29, 1989 in Midland, Michigan to parents Michael W. Mercer and Linda Ann Dombroski.

Phillip enjoyed most things a Michigan man does, being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and working on different projects. Most of all, he loved spending time with his children and they meant the world to him.

Phillip was always willing to step-up and help someone in need with a smile on his face. He was a “jack of all trades” with a wide array of skills.

Phillip was never defined by his addiction or mistakes, he was a sweet, kind and talented man who fell into its grip. The ups made him feel accepted and okay, yet the downs of withdrawal set in fear and doubt. Addiction does not discriminate.

The day it took his life it also took a part of his children, parents and grandparents heart too. He loved his peers deeply and would use any of his handyman skills to help another person.

Phillip is survived by parents, Linda (Mark) Dombroski and Michael (Melinda) Mercer; beloved children, Jenna Blackburn, Tanner Mercer, and Henry Mercer; grandparents, Patricia Cathcart, Roger “Sam” (Connie) Mercer; siblings, Bradley (Kristina) VanPelt, Thomas (Amber) VanPelt; nieces and nephews, Isabella, Destiny, Dylan, Dominic, Cody; aunts and uncles, Steve (Christine) Cathcart, Troy (Misty) Mercer, Robin (David) Thume; many cousins and dear family friend, Amy Manges, who was like another mom to him. Phillip was preceded in death by grandpa, Edward Cathcart; aunt, Jeanie Cathcart; uncle, Edward Cathcart, Jr.; and cousin, Sgt. 1st Class Michael A. Cathcart.
