An exciting news story graced the front page of the November 16, 1922 edition of the Gladwin County Record. A bank robber was apprehended months after the incident thanks to the efforts of Gladwin’s own Sheriff.

“John Sanford, 27 years of age, implicated in the Farwell bank robbery last June, was captured in the woods 41 miles from the Soo last Saturday by Sheriff Hoag of Clare County, Sheriff Schwartz of Chippewa County, and Sheriff Baumgardner of Gladwin who had been on the trail of the burglar since June 25, tracing him from Detroit to the upper peninsula.

A telegram from the Chippewa County Sheriff was received last Thursday saying Sanford had been located. Sheriffs Hoag and Baumgardner arrived at the Soo the next day at 3 p.m. and drove 35 miles, and walked six miles to the logging camps where Sanford was staying.

They arrived at daybreak and found him in bed. The officers entered the camp throwing a flashlight on the man, who immediately grabbed for his .44 Colt automatic, but was not quick enough, as a shot from an officer’s gun took effect in his right shoulder.”
