It’s November in Gladwin County. For more than 100 years, November here has centered around hunting. The entire nature of the place and its population seems to change, first with bow and youth hunts, then with firearms season. This photo depicts a hunting camp in which the hunters have done their jobs. But notice the two holding the tools that will begin to make a successful hunt into family dinners for the coming winter? Of course even then, as now, there were women who also did the hunting. Just ask about how Minnie Foutch lost her eye in a hunting accident. Hers was the beautiful house that was once where the County Annex building now stands. Note that the tent they are using is a repurposed traveling show tent. Before the land here was filled with cottages and hunting cabins, many went on the hunt in tents of all sizes. They often had to be prepared to dress and cut the meat so they could get it home in manageable packages. Of course, it helped when the weather was cold enough, and there was enough snow to track the prey. A lot has changed, but looking at this picture, we can see that a lot has not.
