On patrol with a State Police trooper

Body
EATON RAPIDS State Trooper David Versin, 27, was parked at noon on a recent day on the median of Michigan Road, positioned to see cars coming over the gentle slope ahead, and around the bend behind him using his rearview mirror. It had been about an hour and a half since Versin made a traffic stop – “a while since the last activity” he said.

To the Editor: Those who avoid studying history tend to be the ones who try to justify being less successful or influential than others by “unfair” competition for opportunities or jobs. Much of the political discourse today reflects the whimpering of those who avoid self-inspection by pointing fingers at people they do not know and making childish claims of life being unfair.

New rules after a dishonorable discharge

Body
Not all of us left the service unscathed and with an honorable discharge (and all the benefits that would give us) clutched in our fist. Some of us, for one reason or another, did not make it out with an honorable or general discharge, or we even had a bad conduct discharge and/or a court martial. We left lots of benefits on the table when that happened.

View from the comfy chair

Iwoke up this morning in my “Comfy Chair.” One of those nights, I fell asleep watching the news at 10 p.m. and nodded off, sleeping all night in my marvelous “Comfy Chair.” It does not happen often, just a couple of times a week.

Diabetics receive great results from a plant-based diet

DEAR DR. ROACH: Your recent column about treating diabetes left me wondering. Diabetes, as I understand it, is usually a result of too much sugar being consumed. But consuming carbohydrates is not that different because they are quickly converted to sugar through the human chemical processes. So, why are you promoting a plant-based diet that is high in carbohydrates?

Body
LANSING ecent legislative proposals Rwould further restrict the distribution of deepfakes, the controversial images created by artificial intelligence, or AI. Deepfakes are AI-generated videos of a person’s face on someone else’s body, usually shown engaging in sexually explicit activity and posted with malicious intent.

Rebuttal

To the Editor: You are truly a MAGA Republican. You give your opinion on who would be the best candidate between Biden and Trump, but you also state that you are a “caucasian man”.

Stolen valor, stolen benefits

Body
How, one wonders, does something like this happen? How does a civilian collect $146,000 in VA benefits for allegedly having been wounded and held a prisoner of war in Iraq when he’s never even served in the military?

Protecting democracy and election integrity is essential

DETROIT E ach lawyer takes an oath, the first clause of which is to swear to “support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Michigan.” The preamble to the Model Rules of Professional Responsibility for attorneys – our code of ethics – makes the extent of this obligation crystal clear: “As a public citizen, a lawyer should seek improvement of the law, access to the legal system, the administration of justice and the quality of service rendered by the legal profession. “In addition, a lawyer should further the public’s understanding of and confidence in the rule of law and the justice system because legal institutions in a constitutional democracy depend on popular participation and support to maintain their authority.” Lawyers take this seriously.
