BEAVERTONBeaverton lost one of its legends last Tuesday when football coach Dick Van Wieren passed away at the age of 87.“Coach Van,” who is immortalized by a sign on the scoreboard at Metzger Field, coached for 24 years before retiring in 1985.

SPRING LAKESometimes, when you hit the road, the road hits back.The Gladwin football team traveled over 150 miles to the Grand Rapids area to take on Spring Lake and fell to 0-2 on the season with a 49-14 loss that was never a contest.

MIDLANDAbig finish by Ben Verellen helped the Gladwin boys’ cross country team place third Saturday at the 6th Annual Northwood Invitational.Frankenmuth won the Small Schools Division by packing three runners into the top five, including winner Brett Magnus, who finished in 16:04.9.

PINCONNINGThe Gladwin freshman volleyball team played its first tournament Saturday in Pinconning.In pool play, the Flying G’s beat Standish and Pinconning and split with Saginaw Nouvel and Ogemaw Heights to finish second and advance to bracket play.
