Beavers Taj Spencer inbound for finals at MIS after Regional race

EAST JORDAN

Taj Spencer and Tessa Wohlschlegel of the Beaverton Beavers Cross Country team traveled to East Jordan Saturday to run in the regional race and a chance to qualify for state. Of the two, Spencer will head to the Michigan International Speedway on November 5 to compete in the Division 3 Finals race.

Spencer set a new personal record with a time of 17 minutes, 38.73 seconds. Spencer placed 18th, out of 86 boys. Spencer just missed 17th place edged out by Kalkaska’s Adam Williams by less than 0.10 seconds. Clare’s Brad White placed first in the race with a time of 16:01.80, a new personal best for him as well.

Spencer improved in his second season, having missed the state finals last season.

Wohlschlegel took 24th place, out of 80 girls, with a time of 21:11.93. Wohlschlegel finished one second shy of 23rd and two seconds from 22nd place. Taking first in the girls race was Betsy Skendzel from Traverse City St. Francis. Skendzel finished with a time of 18:07.45.

Wohlschlegel was unable to qualify for state this season after placing 117th in last year’s finals. She will look to rebound next season and return to state in her senior year.
