Shirley Ann Catey
Shirley Ann Catey, a beloved wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away on March 7, 2026, in Gladwin, Michigan, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Jan. 31, 1938, in Sparta, Michigan, to the late Cecil L. and Viola L. (Bridges) Hughes, who preceded her in death.
Shirley, a proud graduate of Grand Ledge High School, Class of 1957, was known for her warmth, generosity, and infectious laughter. She embraced the role of a homemaker, dedicating her life to nurturing and supporting her family. Shirley found great joy in reading, bowling, and her love of baseball, which colored her leisure hours with happiness.
Nature was a sanctuary for Shirley; she cherished the great outdoors, often spending time deer hunting, fishing for salmon on the Great Lakes, and searching for morel mushrooms. These moments in nature were not just hobbies for her – they represented times of joy, connection, and adventure.
Cherished by her family, she is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Thomas F. Catey, and their children: Timothy, Pamela (Greg Hejl), and James (Jennifer) Catey. She is also survived by her sisters: Gloria Joseph and Karen Hughes. The bonds they shared will forever live on in the memories they created together. Shirley was preceded in death by siblings: Cecil Hughes Jr., Herman Hughes, Roger Hughes, Berneice Dayton, and Marjorie Youngs.
A graveside service will be held at the Strange Cemetery, Oneida Twp., Eaton Co., where friends and family will gather to honor her life and the impact she had on all who knew her. Details of the service will be announced when they become available.
