BEAVERTONThe individual state meet marked the end of the 2024-25 high school wrestling season and ushered in awards season.Beaverton state champion Eli Roe earned First Team All-Conference honors in Division 2 of the Jack Pine Conference at 157 pounds.

At least it wasn’t a fluke. The very concept of March Madness revolves around underdog teams playing unbelievable games or hitting three-quarter court shots at the buzzer to knock off the favorites, who are left with no more games left to play bemoaning the one that got away.Not this time.

DETROITOn the biggest stage in the biggest match, Beaverton sophomore Eli Roe came through in the biggest way Saturday night, winning the championship at 157 pounds at the Division 4 Individual State Wrestling Tournaent.

GLADWINClosing out the regular season with two wins in two nights sent the Gladwin girls’ basketball team into this week’s state tournament with some momentum.Kind of. The Flying G’s wrapped things up last Tuesday with a 35-28 victory at Farwell that was hardly an instant classic.

BEAVERTONThere aren’t any easy games on the docket for the Beaverton girls’ basketball team this week as the Beavers host a Division 3 district tournament.They will tip things off tonight at 7 p.m. with a semifinal battle against Beal City.The winner will play in the championship game Friday at 7 p.

ALPENAIt was close for a long time and then it wasn’t. The Gladwin hockey team was eliminated from the Division 3 state tournament last Wednesday night when the Flying G’s lost 5-1 to host Alpena in the regional finals.
