GLADWIN – If you haven’t been outside since the cold weather hit you are probably starting to get “cabin fever.” Let’s see if the Gladwin County Record can help.
The DNR is sponsoring their first of two 2019 Free Fishing Weekends Feb. 16-17. All fishing license fees will be waived for the two days. Also a Recreation Passport will not be required for entry into state parks and recreation areas over the weekend. The weekend covers all Michigan waters including the Great Lakes, but all fishing regulations still apply. Besides ice fishing on local lakes and rivers several nearby communities are sponsoring events over the weekend:
Elk Lake Fishing Tournament and Chili Cook Off – hosted by the Elk Lake Bar starting at 8 a.m.
WinterFest and Fishing Derby – hosted by the Higgins Lake-Roscommon Chamber of Commerce
Winter Festival – Bay City State Park
Catch Us If You Can- Double the Fun, Houghton Lake, Higgins Lake, Lake St. Helen. Prizes offered for catching tagged fish.
Hiking, Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing
South River Trail The paved bike trail from North Park to the River Road Trailhead in Gladwin has been left unplowed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
Gladwin County Recreation Area – the area located on Shaw Road has numerous trails suitable for winter hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. There are five miles of groomed cross-country trails and one mile of groomed snowshoe trails. The ice this winter has made for some tough conditions.
Gladwin Field Trial Area – Meredith, part of the Gladwin State Forest approximately 4,750 acres open to non-motorized foot travel.
Lame Duck Foot Access Area – northeast Gladwin County in Bourret Township, 11,000 acres with all types of foot travel permitted including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking.
Hartwick Pines State Park – Hartwick Pines near Grayling has multiple trails suitable for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking. They also offer interpretive events throughout the winter including: Guided snowshoe hikes, snowshoe building workshops and Full Moon and Winter Solstice Snowshoe hikes.
Snowmobiling & ATVs
Secord Lake Eagles Fun Run – February 16 registration at 11 a.m. Scheduled stops include The Camp, Elk Lake Bar, and River House.
Down Hill Skiing & Tubing
Snow Snake – in Harrison is 100 percent open for Skiing and Snow Boarding and the Tubing runs are open Friday through Sunday.
