The Mid Michigan Heat tuned up for their trip the NSA World Series by winning the Presque Isle Tournament last weekend. The girls dominated the competition going 7-0 in the tournament.
The championship game pitted the Heat against the Panthers for the second time over the weekend and for the second time the Heat came out on top this time by a score of 9-2. The Panthers scored first in the game taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Mid Michigan tied the score in the bottom of the inning and broke the game open with four runs after two were out in the bottom of the third.
Abby Manges got things started with a walk and Grace Simpson followed with a single. An error by the Panther short stop allowed Mae Guzman to reach first and loaded the bases for Malea Gardner. She singled emptying the bases and giving the Heat a 4-1 lead. Another single, this time by Maddy Bass drove in Gardner making the score 5-1.
Another run in the fourth and three more in the sixth made the final score 9-2. Bass led the Heat offense with four hits and four RBIs. Manges and Gardner each had two hits. Rebecca Mecca started and threw a complete game for Mid Michigan. She struck out two and yielded four hits over seven innings. Neither of the Panther runs was earned.
The Heat are 19-0-1 on the season and will open up World Series play on Thursday morning in Crown Point, Indiana. There first game is against Velocity Red from Indiana.
