MIDLAND – The Mid Michigan Heat went 6-1 over the weekend on the way to the championship of the Line Drive Tournament. The Heat started out 2-0 with a pair of wins on Friday. They beat Vengeance Vengeance 6-1 in the first game and took game two 10-0 over the Macomb Shock.
Zoe Merillat pitched the first game for the Heat giving up only one run on six hits. Molly Gerow hit a three run homer in the third for the Heat. Eight different Heat batters had hits in the game. Mady Pahl had a triple, Merillat a double. Lyndsey Fillenworth threw a no-hitter in game two against Macomb. She struck out seven Macomb batters over four innings. Amber Hochstetler had two hits including a triple. Pahl, Kylie Herkel, and Averie Bassage had two RBIs apiece.
The Heat suffered their first loss of the season against Bob Line Drive on Saturday morning. Bob jumped on the Heat early scoring five runs in the bottom of the first, and the Heat was unable to muster much offense in the 7-1 loss. The Heat were held to three hits in the game including a RBI triple by Herkel. Molly Gerow got the start for the Heat at pitcher. She gave up 10 hit but only one earned run in the loss. The Heat were able to bounce back Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 win over the Mid Michigan Bolts. Fillenworth threw a three hitter and struck out five to get the win. Five Heat batters picked up hits in the game. Grace Beardsley scored twice for the Heat.
The Heat got three more wins on Sunday to lock up the championship. First up was the Cardinals 02 Hornung. Merillat and Fillenworth split the pitching duties going three innings each. Merillat gave up four hits and three earned runs while striking out one. Fillenworth gave up two hits and struck out five in her three innings of shutout relief. Pahl and Gerow had two hits each, Merillat had two RBIs.
Gerow bounced back with a one hitter in the second game on Sunday, an 8-0 win over the GR Blaze. The Blaze was able to manage only three base runners against her as she struck out five and only walked two in the winning effort. Pahl had three hits and a RBI to lead the Heat attack. Rayne Myers had two RBIs.
Mid Michigan scored three runs late to take a 6-4 win over the Michigan Gold Rush in the final game on Sunday. Trailing 4-3 going into the top of the sixth the Heat rallied to take the lead. Gerow singled with one out and scored on a triple by Merillat. Merillat then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Hochstetler. The Heat picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Beardsley singled and scored three batters later when Soyer Barnett singled.
Lyndsey Fillenworth set the Gold Rush down one-two-three in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. She gave up 12 hits, but only gave up four runs. Barnett, Bassage and Merillat had two hits each. Merillat’s were a double and triple.
