The Flying G baseball team played one of their best games of the season last Tuesday when they defeated first place Pinconning in the first game of a Jack Pine Conference doubleheader.
The Spartans got off to good start scoring two runs in the top of the first. Gladwin answered with one run in the bottom of the inning when Lincoln McKinnon singled to drive in Lucas Mead. Pinconning added to their lead with an unearned run in the third.
Mead scored his second run of the game in the bottom of the fifth. He singled, stole second and scored on a single by Ethan Shea. Hunter Williams, who had walked, advanced to third on the play. Williams scored on a fielder’s choice ground ball off of the bat of McKinnon to tie the game at 3-3.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the ninth inning. Mead singled again with one out and again stole second base. After Williams walked again Shea came to bat with runners on first and second and one out. He singled to center field driving in Mead and giving Gladwin the walk off 4-3 win.
“We played a great game with Pinconning in game one, said Coach Troy Gary. “Ian Graves was again phenomenal on the mound going all nine innings.” Graves gave up six hits and only one earned run over the nine innings. He also struck out five.
Pinconning struck for four runs in the bottom of the first in game two putting Gladwin in a hole they couldn’t climb out of. The Pinconning pitching staff was sharp giving up only four hits in the game.
Gladwin scored single runs in the second and fifth innings. McKinnon led off the second inning with a homerun. Randy Przyewski singled in the fifth and scored on a wild pitch later in the inning. The Spartans won game two 5-2. “We were very clean in both games and played well,” continued Gary. “Pinconning just played better than us in game two.”
The Flying G’s pounded Sand Creek 12-2 on Saturday. Gladwin scored three runs in the first and seven in the second to run away with the game. Richard Woodford had three hits in the game. Przyewski had a triple and three RBIs. Connor Dee added two RBIs.
Three pitchers shared the mound for Gladwin. Shea pitched two and two thirds scoreless innings. Caleb Searfoss threw an inning and a third while Tyler Yott Goodwin pitched the final two innings. The Flying G’s are 14-8 on the season. They played Harrison last night and Coleman tonight. They have a bye in the first round of the District playoffs and will play the winner of the Standish/ Big Rapids game on Saturday, June 5 in Remus.
