HOUGHTON LAKE – The Flying G’s were in Houghton Lake on back-to-back nights last week. On Wednesday they faced the Bobcats and then traveled back on Thursday for a rematch with Houghton Lake and a match against Ogemaw Heights.
The first match with Houghton Lake was a close 2-1 loss for the G’s. Houghton Lake took the first game 25-16. “We struggled to break a couple of their servers,” said Coach Jane Wetmore. “We served better ourselves in game two and were able to set up more.” Gladwin took that game 25-21 setting up a decisive third game which the Bobcats won 15-12. “We got down by a couple of points early in the game and couldn’t quite catch up,” added Wetmore.
Sindle Corlew and Cassiday Mercer each had five kills, followed by Lizzie Haines and Abby Manges with three each. Maddie Cantrell and Abby Manges had five digs a piece Anna Seebeck with four. Chloe Lawrason led the team with 17 assists.
The G’s got a measure of revenge on Thursday when they faced Houghton Lake again. Trailing in game one 12-3 Anna Seebeck served 13 straight points to give Gladwin a four-point lead. A lead they would not relinquish on their way to a 25-19 win. Gladwin also served and passed well in game two which they also won by a score of 25-19. Corlew had five kills while Seebeck and Lizzie Haines followed with four. Seebeck, Manges and Cantrell had 6 digs a piece, while Chloe Lawrason had 11 assists for the game.
Gladwin beat Ogemaw Heights by the twin scores of 25-16. “It was their first time on the court,” said Wetmore. “They struggled to return our serves. With the pair of wins on Thursday Gladwin improved to 6-2 on the season. They travel to Beaverton on Friday night.
