Junior Varsity B Volleyball

Madison Shell serves earlier in the season.

GRAYLING –The Gladwin JVB had a busy week. We were in Grayling on Monday, August 31 for a tri with Grayling and Boyne City, Houghton Lake on Wednesday, September 2, and back to Houghton Lake on Thursday, September 3 for a tri with Houghton Lake and Ogemaw.

Monday night was our first time using a libero and Boyne City had some tough servers. We struggled to communicate and had a hard time returning the serve and defending against Boyne City’s tips. We lost in two sets by the score of 16-25 and 13-25.  Despite the loss, Ava Hale was strong at the net with 5 kills. McKenna Pratt also had 2 kills and 3 digs.

Grayling was up next and the girls were warmed up and ready because after a tough loss to them last week we were able to come out with a win by the score of 25-17 and 25-23. Madilynn VonMatt had a nice block at the net. McKenna Pratt and Ava Hale both had 5 kills each. Caiden Ross had a nice assist for a kill. Sadie Schuler and Brytan Muma had several digs to get the ball in the air and set it up for an attack.

We played Houghton Lake on Wednesday, September 2.  The girls came to play tonight. They were running the offense, were in position on defense, and having a fun! We were able to win in two sets with scores of 25-10 and 25-18.  Katie Seebeck and Sadie Schuler had several assists to Ava Hale who ended the night with 5 kills and 4 tips. Abby Palmreuter had a nice dig. These were fun games to watch. The girls are getting better at communicating on the court and making intentional passes on offense as well as moving their feet to get to the ball on defense.

We went back to Houghton Lake on Thursday for a tri with the Bobcats and Ogemaw Heights. We played Houghton Lake first and even though we won the night before we struggled. We played in a different gym and there was an obstruction on the ceiling that caused a lot of errors and we lost the first game 15-25. We were able to switch sides for the second game and won that one 25-20. Houghton Lake didn’t make it easy for us. We had to work hard for every point. We won the third game 15-11 to take the win for the evening. Ava Hale had several attacks at the net assisted by Katie Seebeck and Sadie Schuler. Madyson Chard had a nice back row attack to score our final point of the second game.

We struggled against Ogemaw. Ogemaw had 18 girls and was able to put a new fresh set of girls in for each game. As soon as we started to figure out how they served and hit another group would come in. That was tough for the girls. We lost the first game with a score of 17-25, won the second game 25-7, and then lost a tough one in the third with a score of 13-15. Despite the ceiling challenges and the large Ogemaw team, the girls played a tough.  Sami Musselman led the team in serves scoring 19 points in a row in the second game. Josie Dungerow and Madison Shell both had three kills each.

Getting the news about gyms opening up was exciting. It’s still early in the season. We have a lot to learn, but I have an awesome group of girls that are extremely coachable so I am excited to see how the season continues.
