The 3200 meter relay team of Christensen, Verellen, Mead and Von Matt.

On June 2, members of the Gladwin boys junior high team traveled to Shepherd to compete in their annual MEGASTAR meet. This meet played host to 64 teams from around the state, and due to Covid protocol and limited entries qualifying was the most difficult it has ever been. In order to participate in the meet athletes had to have one of the top 16 times or distances for individual events or one of the top eight times in a relay out of those 64 teams. The Gladwin boys team had a total of eight athletes qualify for the meet and one more record get broken.

Qualifying for the meet for Gladwin were the 3200 meter relay team of Elijah Christensen, Ben Verellen, Seth Mead and Andrew von Matt, the 1600 meter relay team of Garrett Cingano, Myles Robinson, Christensen and von Matt, Mason Meier in the 100 and 200, Drake Ross in the 55 meter hurdles and pole vault, Mead in the 1600, Christensen in the 800, Cingano in the 200 meter hurdles and von Matt in the long jump.

Running their best time of the year by two seconds was the 1600 meter relay team of Cingano, Robinson, Christensen and Von Matt (4:04.88). Earning medals in their events by finishing in the top six were Seth Mead in sixth place in the 1600 (4:57.3) and Drake Ross placing third in the pole vault (11’) and fifth in the 55 meter hurdles (9.00). Also earning medals by winning the meet, setting the best time posted on athletic.net in the state of Michigan and breaking the school record by over eight seconds was the 3200 meter relay team of Elijah Christensen, Ben Verellen, Seth Mead and Andrew Von Matt with a time of 9:11.10.

Qualifying for the girls were the 400m Relay team of Madi Wendling, Breanna Campbell, Ava Gary, and Kamya Cajigas; Madi Wendling also qualified in the 200m Hurdles, Breanna Campbell qualified in the 55m Hurdles and the 200m Dash. Kamya Cajigas qualified in the 70m dash and the long jump. Ava Gary also qualified in the high jump. Abigail Robinson qualified in the long jump, and Callie Mead qualified in the high jump. 

Competitors finishing in the top 6 earned medals. Including; Abigail Robinson 5th with a long jump of 15’5”, breaking the school record she set earlier in the season. Callie Mead earned 2nd place with a jump of 5’ and Ava Gary took 6th with a jump of 4’8”. Breanna Campbell tied for 5th in the 55m Hurdles with a time of 9.7s, and Kamya Cajigas took 4th in the 70m dash with a time of 9.87s. The 400m relay team worked all season to beat the record and finally got it with a time of 53.26s and a 1st place finish at the meet and 1st overall in the state.
