The Gladwin Junior High Cross Country team at the Lancer Invitational

ROSCOMMON – The Gladwin Girls Cross Country team traveled to the Roscommon Invitational last Wednesday and came away with a first place finish beating second place Grayling by 23 points in the six team meet. Eighth grader Tessa Cameron finished first overall with a time of 13:56.4 in the 3200-meter race. Abby Robinson (14:38.28) finished third, Tori Johnson (15:15.03) fifth, Alanis Povey (15:28) sixth and Julia Edick (17:18.88) tenth. Other competitors for Gladwin included; Erica Shanahan (18:08.38), Carmen Bragg (18:09.21), Braelyn Grubb (18:44.94), Ashlyn Martinson (21:09.72), Claire McCarthy (21:44.43) and Arianna Hamilton (22:16.47).

On Saturday the girls ran in the Lancer Invitational placing 6th out of 13 teams. Several Gladwin runners turned in outstanding performances. Robinson (13:12) finished in 5th, and Cameron (13:24) 9th. Both girls medaled in the event. Johnson (14:28), Povey (15:40), Edick (16:41), Shanahan (16:45), Bragg (16:47), Grubb (18:32) and McCarthy (20:26) all ran for Gladwin. Robinson, Cameron, Johnson, Shanahan and McCarthy all had new personal records in the race.

The girls also competed in Clare on August 28. Eighth grader Tessa Cameron and Abby Robinson, seventh grade, both finished second in their respective divisions. Tori Johnson finished in eighth place in the seventh grade race. Alanis Povey was the top finisher for Gladwin in the sixth grade race coming in ninth place overall. Erica Shanahan (16th), Braelyn Grubb (25th), Arianna Hamilton (27) and Claire McCarthy (37) also ran in the sixth grade race. Carmen Bragg (30) and Julia Edick (32) competed at the seventh, grade level.

Coach Selena Volmering is happy with her teams’ performance so far. “We are pleased with the amount of miles the girls put in during the summer - it is showing in their early season racing.” She also mentioned,  “We have a really hard working group of girls and we are pleased with the talent of the new 6th grade runners.”
