ANN ARBOR – The Gladwin American Legion Post 171 opened the season last week with a championship at the FAAST June Baseball Bash in Ann Arbor. The team played four games over the weekend in Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor going 3-0-1.

Gladwin played Milan in the first round winning 6-0. Gerhet Metiva started for Gladwin pitching five and a third innings striking out 11 while giving up only two hits and no walks in the winning effort. John Cogswell pitched the final two thirds of an inning striking out one of the two batters he faced.

The big inning for Gladwin was the fifth. They sent eight batters to the plate and scored five runs. Ethan Shea, Dane Smitz, Reed Raymond, Hunter Merillat and Jonas Kanouse all collected hits in the inning. Smitz and Reed Raymond both had two hits in the game. Raymond, Merillat, Metiva, Kanouse and Carson Longstreth all had RBIs in the game.

Gladwin played the Glass City Bombers to a 3-3 tie in their second game on Saturday. Longstreth had the big bat in the game hitting a home run and collecting all three RBIs. Merillat and Chase Raymond had two hits each. Justin Greer got the start on the mound throwing four and a third innings giving up one hit and striking out one. John Cogswell pitched the final two and two third innings to preserve the tie.

Longstreth homered for the second consecutive game when he hit a two run shot in the fifth inning in Gladwin’s 6-1 win against chief Pontiac Post 377 on Sunday afternoon. He had three more hits in the game, going four-for-four, including two doubles. Merillat got the start and win for Gladwin. He pitched five innings giving up four hits and striking out two. He also had two hits in the game. Lane Peters pitched the scoreless inning in relief striking out two of the batters he faced.

Gladwin jumped all over the Northville Broncos early to take a 9-1 win in the championship game. Gladwin scored four runs in the first, two in the second, and two in the third to run away with the game. Longstreth got three more hits in the game giving him nine on the weekend. Smitz, Reed Raymond, Kanouse, and Metiva had two apiece. Merillat knocked in three runs, Kanouse, Shea, Peters, and Greer each had one RBI. Reed Raymond pitched the first six innings for the win striking out ten while only giving up two hits. Longstreth pitched the seventh striking out all three batters he faced.

Gladwin hosts the 26th Bernard Barnes Memorial Tournament this weekend with games being played in both Gladwin and Beaverton. The Stars Division games, which include the Post 171 team, will be played at Wilmont Field. Gladwin plays at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday. The Gladwin Lightning Post 171 team plays at Beaverton High School at the same times. Semi-final participants will be determined at the conclusion of pool play. The semi-finals will be played at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Sunday with the winners meeting in the championship game at 3 p.m.
