The girls’ track team won their second big meet of the year taking the nine team Roscommon Invitational by over 65 points. While the conditions were far from ideal the girls ran well. Racheal Nyarko had a big day for the Flying G’s winning three events. She finished first in the 400m (1:06.82), high jump (4’6”) and the long jump (16’). Lizzie Haines won two events the 100m hurdles (17.73), and 300m hurdles (53.31). “We are running well right now and working very hard,” said Coach Kernie Gilliam.
Other winners for Gladwin included: Kamya Cajigas in the 100m (14.20), Ava Gary 200m (28.96), Abby Robinson 1600m (5:59.96) and Emily Heyer pole vault 7’6”. Cajigas finished second in the 200m (30.11), Gary came in second in the 400m (1:06.82), and third in the high jump (4’6”). Robinson finished second in the long jump (14’9.5”). Breanna Campbell finished second in the 100m (14.37) and fourth in the 100m hurdles (19.84). Callie Mead came in third in the high jump (4’6”) and fourth in the 800m (2:59.23).
Gladwin also won three relays: 4x800m – 11:43.86 – team of Macy Haines, Madi Wendling, Racheal Nyarko, Abby Robinson, 4x400m – 4:39.25 – team of Macy Haines, Lizzie Haines, Tessa Shea, Abby Robinson, 4x100m – 55.03 – Breanna Campbell, Lizzie Haines, Macy Haines, Kamya Cajigas.
Coach Gilliam mentioned that several runners made big improvements in the meet. Morgan Bailey knocked a half of a second in the 100m. Ivy Greer shaved two seconds off of her 800m time and Brooke Methner took 30 seconds off of her time in the 1600m. “We have a good group of kids who want to win, and we finally have some numbers so there is competition on the team,” said Gilliam. “We have 30 athletes, but only seven have varsity experience. Twelve are without any track experience in varsity or Junior high so there has been a learning curve the first four weeks.”
The Flying G’s have two meets this week. The host Jack Pine Conference foes Farwell and Harrison this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. and travel to Standish Sterling High School on Friday for the Sunrise Relays at 3:30 p.m.
