BEAVERTON – The Beavers dominated the field Friday when they won the Beaverton Invitational for the second year in a row. They won all five of their matches without losing a game. They went on to defeat Central Montcalm (25-18, 25-14) in the semi finals and Manton (25-19, 25-20) in the finals.
Leaders for Beaverton on the day included; Molly Gerow 48 kills, 37 digs, 3 aces, Mady Pahl 97 assists, 20 digs, 14 kills, 7 aces, Macie Jerome 40 digs, 11 aces, 6 kills, Becca Wirt 17 kills, Hannah Stearns 10 kills, 11 aces, Averie Bassage 17 digs, 6 aces and Alexis Grove 19 digs, 7 kills, 2 aces. “We played much better today,” said Coach Steve Evans. “I really liked how our middles and right sides stepped up and attacked the ball.”
Beaverton suffered its first loss of the year last Wednesday at the Freeland Quad. The Beavers beat Bay City Western (25-16, 25-20) and Gladwin (25-10, 25-12) before running into a very good Freeland team. The Falcons won both games by scores of 25-16 and 30-28.
“We went 2-1, but our process wasn’t where we needed it to be all night. We showed signs of our potential, but we didn’t stay there enough,” said Evans. “We needed to control the ball way better to beat Freeland. They took advantage when we didn’t control the ball.” Molly Gerow had 31 kills, 16 digs, Mady Pahl added 49 assists and 6 kills. Macie Jerome had 32 digs, 9 aces and 6 kills Alexis Grove had 14 digs.
The tournament win on Friday was a nice bounce back for the Beavers. They are 13-1-1 on the season and return to action on Saturday when they travel to the Bay City Central Invitational starting at 8 a.m.
