After a couple of weather cancellations the Beavers were finally able to get on the field last Monday for a home double-header with Breckenridge. While the conditions were far from ideal it was a great day for the Beavers as they came up with walk off wins in both games.
Grace Simpson got the start and win in both games for Beaverton. She also had a big day at the plate. After retiring the side in the top of the first inning of game one she led off the bottom of the inning with a homerun. She also provided some heroics late in the game. The score was tied 6-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Hannah Stearns walked and advanced to second base on a passed ball. She scored the winning run on a single by Simpson.
Simpson led the Beavers with three hits in game one. She struck out eight Breckenridge batters while giving up four hits and seven walks. Alexis Grove had two hits including a triple and one RBI. Sawyer Gerow two hits including a double and an RBI. Stearns had a double and triple; Jadyn Bair added an RBI.
Beaverton trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Leiyah Mungin doubled with one out. Lily Ficek reached base on an error and was replaced by pinch runner Taylor McCormick. Kayla Newman was walked intentionally loading the bases. The next batter struck out bringing Jadyn Bair to the plate with two outs. She hit a ground ball to second base, which was mishandled allowing Mungin and McCormick to score giving Beaverton the 4-3 win.
Mungin had two hits including the double in game two. Grove, Gerow and Ficek had doubles. Simpson and Laken Longstreth also had hits. Simpson struck out and gave up five hits in the game. “We are really proud of the kids battling in both these games. Grace Simpson stepped up and had an incredible evening and we had a lot of clutch hits,” said Coach Aaron Wentworth. “The key to the game was that we had zero errors tonight.”
The 2-0 Beavers travel to Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart on Thursday.
