The Beaverton girls prepared for the upcoming state playoffs by traveling to Bay City where they played several very good teams. The 10th ranked Beavers lost to No. 5 ranked Central Montcalm 7-1 and Division 1 Bay City Central 8-2. Central plays in the tough Saginaw Valley League where they face some of the best teams in the state. They defeated Division 1 Alpena 6-5.
The Beavers used the “long ball” to their advantage against Alpena hitting three homeruns. Alpena scored first in the top of the first with a homerun of their own to take an early 2-0 lead. Mady Pahl answered with a lead off homer in the bottom of the first. Molly Gerow followed with a single and after Alexis Grove was hit by a pitch and Logan Matthews walked the Beavers had the bases loaded with one out. Rayne Myers grounded out to the shortstop driving in Gerow with the tying run.
Beaverton took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two run homer by Matthews. She drove in Sawyer Gerow who had singled with one out in the inning. Alpena tied the score in the top of the sixth and had the Beavers in trouble in the seventh. The Wildcats loaded the bases with three straight singles to start the inning. The next Alpena hitter grounded back to Cadence Augustine who got the lead runner at the plate. The next batter hit a ground ball to Pahl at second base and the Beavers turned a double play keeping the score tied.
Molly Gerow led off the bottom of the seventh with her third hit of the game, a homerun to left field that gave the Beavers a 6-5 win. Pahl had two hits in the game while Mathews had two RBIs. Myers, Lily Ficek and Pahl also had RBIs.
The Beavers are 31-6 heading into the district tournament. They played Harrison last night in Farwell and with a victory will advance to the district semifinals on Friday at noon against Houghton Lake. The district finals will also be played on Friday with the winner of the noon game playing the winner of the game between Clare and Farwell. The championship game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
