Beaverton girls fall to Meridian in district hoop semifinals

PINCONNING Today met tomorrow Wednesday in the Division 3 girls’ basketball district semifinals at Pinconning. Beaverton took a roster with five freshmen and two seniors up against Meridian’s seven seniors and two freshmen and the Mustangs ran away with a 66-31 victory.

GLADWIN Here is Gladwin wrestling coach Buddy Goldsworthy’s diary from the individual state finals, which were held March 1- 2 at Ford Field in Detroit: Michigan prides itself for hosting one of the nation’s largest high school wrestling tournaments held under one roof. All four of the boys’ divisions and the girls’ division make for a long, but very exciting, weekend.

Gladwin’s Pyrzewski second at wrestling state tourney

DETROIT The finest female wrestler in Gladwin history wrapped up a stellar career Saturday when senior Tricia Pyrzewski placed second at 105 at the girls’ individual state meet at Ford Field in Detroit. Pyrzewski brought a record of 42-5 to her fourth straight trip to the main event and earned her second silver medal.

Why not one more district title for Coach Roy Johnston, who won 17 of them in his first 49 years on the sidelines for Beaverton? Everyone in red who helped host Beal City’s fans pack the gym Friday night for a Division 3 district final was certainly entertaining thoughts like that, but the Aggies didn’t go along with the program and sent the Beavers packing with an impressive 58-36 victory in Johnston’s final game. “There’s reality in coaching,” Johnston said.
