To the Editor:
Within days of the selection of Kamala Harris as our vice-presidential candidate, 100 Biden/Harris yard signs flew out the door of our Beaverton campaign office. We ran out of 140 Biden signs several days before that.
A drive down our county’s main highways and country byways reveals that the number of signs displayed in yards does not even come close to the numbers we distributed.
Is the support for their candidate stronger than ours, or are we less supportive? No to both. I believe something else is going on.
The brutish behavior coming almost daily from the top of the Republican ticket is having a negative impact around the country and causing people to act in ways we know they wouldn’t in other circumstances.
Locally, Biden supporters are telling us yard signs are disappearing from their lawns, as they did in 2016. Worse, other supporters seeing the fervent attitudes of the opposition reveal that they fear retaliation if they display their signs.
This is a direct result of the confrontational stance suggested from the top. This should not be endorsed or tolerated by anyone let alone our local Republican friends and neighbors.
