HARRISON – The Verizon Innovative Learning Program returns to Mid for 2019, and introduces science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills, including augmented reality, 3D printing, entrepreneurship, and more, to 6th-8th grade girls.
Launched in partnership with the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), this program will again be hosted at 16 community colleges, engaging over 1,500 students.
This summer 100 6th-8th grade girls from local middle schools in Clare and Gladwin counties will attend courses at Mid Michigan College during an intensive three-week learning camp.
Students will also experience the Verizon Innovative Learning Explorer Lab, an entirely new way for middle school students to discover concepts of engineering design. The explorer lab combines movie-quality video, special effects, and hands-on educational gaming to create a learning environment that gets kids excited about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) – right in the school parking lot.
The explorer lab takes participants on a field trip to Mars, and students work in pairs to overcome different challenges such as crossing different terrains, collecting evidence, and conserving energy by modifying and improving their rovers in the tablet-based learning environment.
Following the summer, the students will participate in monthly sessions throughout the academic year where they will develop a technology solution for a community problem.
There are still spots available for interested students and registration is open through July 19! The camp takes place 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays July 22 through Aug. 9 and is free of charge.
Participating students receive lunch each day and a tablet to use during the camp. Interested students should register by July 19 and can do so by contacting Sarah Kohler at email@example.com or 989-386-6622 x535.
Verizon Innovative Learning gives free technology, free access, and innovative curricula to students impacted by the digital divide to help them realize a brighter future.
