Hello again, I think it’s been nearly a year since my last article, as you all had a lot to digest: mask or no mask, shot or no shot, restrictions or no restrictions and the list goes on. The entire staff at the Sheriff’s Office want to say thank you to our community for your patience and support through it all. Community support is vital to the overall success of our law enforcement team here, and we know it, so again, thank you!
A couple of very quick things to communicate about with friends and family. First, if you get the scam calls that the “Sheriff” is coming out to arrest you if you do not call back right away, well, it is a scam. If the Sheriff’s Office were trying to get ahold of you, we would not threaten you, we would tell you the reason we were trying to reach out then leave the following number, 989-426-9284. This number is the direct administrative line to the Sheriff’s Office. If you have any doubt that it may be a scam just call us and our dispatch team will be happy to help.
Secondly, two other huge issues right now are Social Security and the IRS. You should all know that the Social Security and IRS do not call you! It is tax time right now, so getting taxes done is on the television every few minutes, so the scammers take advantage of it. A big red flag for you on these type of calls are, if they want you to go get money orders or any kind of card at your local store for payment. If they ask you to western union the money or ask for the numbers off the money card, it’s a scam!
One other huge red flag on these issues are the fact that “you have to do it right away and to not tell anyone.” Let’s face it, if your Social Security information was actually compromised, a guy on the phone telling you about it is no help. Reach out to your financial institution (not the telephone number they leave you) and your bank will walk you through safe guards.
The next Sheriff Corner article will center around Nixle, it’s a system utilized to notify our citizens of valid timely information about severe weather and safety information.
