BEAVERTON – Nine students and three chaperones from Beaverton Jr./Sr. High School attended the annual Business Professionals of America (BPA) State Leadership Conference in Grand Rapids March 15-18.

Business Professionals of America is a dynamic youth organization that provides leadership and business opportunities for high school students to prepare them in their selection as they make decisions on their future careers.

Students competed in many events such as word processing, database applications, interviews, accounting, and medical and law procedures with the goal of earning a top spot and representing Michigan at the National Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas in May.

Students also attended workshops, a dinner/dance, and opening and closing ceremonies. Advisor Jennie Ewert, Stacie Oard Fassett, Tina Hayes, and Amy Brushaber accompanied the students for the weekend.

A highlight of the conference was when Parker Hayes (son of Tom and Tina Hayes) and Anna Brushaber (daughter of Brad and Amy Brushaber) were called up on stage and awarded “top spots” for placing in their events. They were given plaques in front of over 2,000 members. Parker placed 2nd in Advanced Accounting, 3rd in Payroll Accounting, and earned a Statesman Torch Award for leadership. Anna placed 7th in Interview Skills after competing in a preliminary round and competing again in a finalist round. She earned a Statesman Torch Award for leadership also. Parker and Anna will now advance to the National Leadership Conference in Dallas. Both students will also be recognized at the National Conference for achieving the Ambassador Torch Award for their exemplary leadership and participation in the organization.

Approximately 5,000 other conference delegates will attend this conference to participate in national level business skills competitions, workshops, general sessions, and the national officer candidate campaigns and elections. Parker and Anna are looking forward to representing Beaverton Jr./Sr. High School at the national event and are busy fundraising to cover the cost of attending.
