GLADWIN – If you were in downtown Gladwin between 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. on December 18 through December 23, you may have seen a group of people strolling along caroling. The Dickens Downtown event hosted by the Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce featured a host lamplighter each evening. The lamplighter dressed in Victorian attire, lit the lights in each of the lanterns from the Country Corner Bulk Foods store to Riverwalk Place and back to the Hall-Kokotovich Funeral Home.
The host lamplighters were Cory Barz, Chamber Board Member and Chair; Sydney Compton, Miss Beaverton; Bret Robertson, owner of Gladwin Family Pharmacy; President Tim Hood, Mid Michigan College; Bob Balzer, Chamber Board Member and Gladwin County EDC Director; and Lara Steele, realtor for 989 Real Estate.
Each night, a small group of community members sang Christmas carols to bring much needed holiday spirit to the community. The group had guest appearances on nights by Santa Claus; Wes Kelley, who played his bagpipes of Christmas carols; Gladwin City Council members, Sara Kile, Carol Darlington and Roger Gardner; and many community members from Gladwin and Beaverton.
The Gladwin County Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all of the sponsors of their lanterns that helped make the event possible, all of their lamplighters, carolers and all of the businesses that stayed open on Main Street. The chamber looks forward to this being a larger event next year with more entertainment. To follow the chamber’s events, view their webpage or Facebook page for more information, or join the committee.
