BREAKING: One killed, one injured in M-18 accident

GLADWIN COUNTY - On Saturday Oct 8 at approximately 8:10 p.m., Gladwin Co. sheriff deputies responded to a two-vehicle accident involving a farm tractor and a passenger car. The accident occurred on S. M-18, approximately 1/2 mile south of Dale Road within Beaverton Twp of Gladwin Co. The preliminary investigation indicates the car ran into the rear of a field implement the tractor was pulling. The driver of the car, Carolyn Irene Swanstra, age 63, was pronounced dead at thte scene. The passenger, Sheila Mae, age 64, was transported by helicopter to St. Mary's Hospital, Saginaw, with life-threatening injuries. Hospital medical staff reported that Mae is in critical condition. The operator of the tractor, Dirk Maxwell, age 71, was not injured. The investigation into the accident is in progress. It is unknown if alcohol or narcotics are involved at this time.
